I'm gonna come right out and say it. This blog thing freaks me out. Can't imagine that A) I have anything interesting enough going on in my noggin that anyone's gonna care to read about, and B) having said A, that I've not just set a precident for everything I say moving forward to be lame.
WHEW, so glad to get that off my chest!
So yeah, anyway....
This was one crazy freakshow of a week. I dj'd Wednesday at Crash, the new night I'm doing with Miss DJ PGee at Felix. It was really cool. I've been feeling a little stale lately with all the alt-pop, so it was kinda nice to be able to let loose and play whatever the hell I wanted to. A little electronicy jazz, a little hip hop, a little whatnot. Yay. BTW, that said, you all should check out this band Macha that I'm diggin right now. Kind of has an alt/indie flavor. If you can imagine something like instrumental rock of an Echo ATB nature mixed with indonesian gamelan overtones, that's kinda what they're like. I'm also obsessed with that crappy new hip hop song Mr. Lonely. I think the song is about the coolest, yet most freakishly annoying thing I've ever heard (much like that Milkshake song that everyone says they don't like, but I guarantee has had heads bopping in private, including yours truly). Anyway, Mr. Lonely has that unique ability to worm it's way into your gray matter and hang out there waaaay longer than it should.
So then Friday I dj'd at Saint Ex. - and I have to say, in spite of the large contingent of kids with greek letters tattooed below the tazmanian devil on their ankles, I had fun making them my puppets with a bunch of weird stuff from my musical library. The kids shook their bugle-boy clad bums like there was no tomorrow, and I only got one request for Bon Jovi - bonus!!!
Oh, one thing, since I'm apparently in a chatty mood. I know it disturbs some of my RR peeps that I succumb to the frat rock and the hip hop on occasion. I'm not selling out, kids, I'm buying in, k? Just kidding - that's a line from one of my very fave movies, SLC Punk. Anyhoo... The truth is, I like all kinds of music. ALL kinds. Yes, including bluegrass, classic rock, and even metal, as some of my nearest and dearest can attest. I have sincerely ecclectic taste, and will tap my toes and shake my money maker to just about anything. That I can think of, there's no genre I won't at least give a moment of my time to. That said, I know some of the stuff I play at venues like St Ex might not sit well with RR regulars. I can appreciate that. But, to keep my love for all things spooky, dark, and Euro import 12" remixed, I must succumb to the dark side once in a while. You know, balance that alt-pop yin with the hip hop yang, or whatever.
So tonight I'm laying low, doing some dreaded yet necessary paperwork (whoever it was that said the dj business was all glamour should be strung up...) and hanging with my darling man-friend. Then, it's back to the grindstone djing a wedding tomorrow over the river in VA. WHEW!!! I am a busy gal, y'all, make no mistake. Luckily both Monday and next weekend will offer some reprieve, as they're pretty much the only days I don't have booked for the next 6 months. It's beautiful, but exhausting, I must say...
